Apakah Anda mengunjungi "dokter Google" lebih sering dari dokter di klinik? Anda tidak sendiri. Dalam sebuah survei tahun lalu di Amerika diketahui bahwa 35 persen responden mencocokkan gejala penyakitnya di internet dan mendiagnosis dirinya sendiri.
Masih menurut survei yang dilakukan The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project itu, sekitar 41 responden mengatakan diagnosis sendiri itu ternyata dikonfirmasi kebenarannya oleh dokter.
Tetapi, sekitar satu dari tiga responden mengaku tidak pernah pergi ke dokter untuk mencari opini kedua. Malahan, 18 persen responden mengatakan bahwa upaya mendiagnosis sendiri itu ternyata salah ketika ditanyakan ke dokter.
Meski survei yang melibatkan 3.000 responden itu sebenarnya dilakukan untuk mengetahui siapa yang mencari informasi kesehatan secara online , tetapi para profesional medis merasa khawatir dengan tren itu.
"Rata-rata tiap orang mengunjungi empat situs lalu memutuskan ia menderita kanker dan akan segera meninggal. Padahal, di internet banyak informasi yang keliru," kata Rahul K Khare, dokter unit gawat darurat dari Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Menurut Khare, ia sering menemukan pasien yang hidupnya menjadi penuh kecemasan karena mereka merasa menderita penyakit berat setelah mencocokkan gejala yang dirasakannya dengan informasi di internet. (sumber: kompas.com)
